Their latest single, ‘Wonderful’ (September 26th, Estupendo Records) suggests Little Fish have spent the last year perfecting their trademark sound. Desert guitars and 90s keyboards mix with lead singer Juju’s raspy warble to create a ballsy rock sound even more exciting than when they emerged last year.
With ‘Wonderful’, the band have replaced some of their grungy elements with some lighter indie-pop vibes, boosted by the uplifting chorus: “It’s wonderrrrful/when I can tell you everything”. Although seemingly positive, the song is based on the period after Juju lost her voice and was told she could never sing again, bringing some poignancy into the mix.
It is worth mentioning that Little Fish are irresistible simply for the way they treat their fans. The band’s Little Fish Paper Club is an endearing reward scheme of handmade postcards and letters for the self-proclaimed ‘squids’ (an adoring fan base somewhat comparable to Lady Gaga’s ‘Little Monsters’).
Arts and crafts aside, this is a band that demands your attention. In the run up to their second album, the trio have left their label – Custard Records – and have decided to go DIY with this one, using locally-sourced input for the record. If this first track is any indication of what we can expect, we are in for a treat of energy, optimism and that unmistakable trademark sound.
